How to update your preferred and legal name on your Betterment account

Sometimes life changes come with name changes. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to update your Betterment account to reflect your name change.

Update your preferred name

Login to your account here.

Under “Your Account” in the bottom left corner of your dashboard, click “Settings”.

By your name, select “Change First Name”. Please note, Betterment will ask to authenticate your account. Please have your mobile phone or email open to provide the authentication code.

Fill out your preferred name. Select Submit.

Please note, this does not update your legal name, just the name you will be addressed as in future communications.

In order to update your legal name, you must contact Betterment Support directly. They will need the following information:

  • Your previous name
