Adding beneficiaries to your Schwab investment account

Adding beneficiaries is an important step to ensuring a smooth transition of assets in the event of your death.

 

Before you get started

  1. You’ll need two things: Your Account Holder’s SSN, all your beneficiary’s full names & birthdates
  2. We recommend doing it yourself online as this will only take 10-20 minutes. Our step by step instructions are below.

Adding or editing beneficiaries yourself on Schwab Alliance

If you are not sure if you have a Schwab Alliance account, please contact the Schwab Alliance team at 800-515-2157.


I. Visit schwaballiance.com

1. Login to schwaballiance.com.

2. Along the top menu bar, hover the cursor over Service and click Beneficiaries under My Profile.

 
II. Find your account

3. Scroll down to locate the appropriate account. Expand the account by clicking the drop down arrow.
4. You’ll either see no beneficiaries or current beneficiaries here.
5. Click Edit Account.
 
III. Edit your beneficiaries

6. Click Create a New Beneficiary and a pop-up window will appear.
This is also where you can add, edit, or remove your beneficiaries in the future.
 
IV. Enter your beneficiary information

7. Enter the beneficiary’s personal information.
If adding a trust, organization, or estate as a beneficiary, change the Beneficiary Type to Entity. Under Entity Type, select trust, organization, or estate.
8. Click Continue.
 
V. Allocate beneficiary amounts

9. Enter the portion each beneficiary will receive, either as a percentage or fixed dollar amount. You can also use the radio button to divide the assets evenly among beneficiaries.
10. Repeat steps 6-10 as necessary.
11. Click Continue to proceed to Contingent Beneficiaries.
 
 
VI. Contingent beneficiaries

12. Following the same steps as before, add any contingent beneficiaries to inherit assets if there are no surviving primary beneficiaries. 
 
VII. Additional Options

13. Review the Additional Options section and elect per stirpes or per capita designations. Click Learn More for explanations.
14. Click Continue.

15. Click I agree and Submit
 

Still having trouble? 

Call your Schwab Alliance Team at 800-515-2157 and request to add a beneficiary to your account. You need the following:

  • Charles Schwab Account Number

  • Social Security Number

  • Beneficiary Full Name

  • Beneficiary Date of Birth

Or have Human Investing help. Please email access@humaninvesting.com requesting the “Add Beneficiary” eSignature Document. Our team will send you the form via DocuSign to electronically complete.
